Pharmacy Technology
Program Description:
The pharmacy technician is a skilled technical health worker who performs a wide variety of non-discretionary pharmacy related tasks under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist and nurse. Medical Standards/Essential Functions are incorporated for you review in this program's curriculum. They have been designed to give you more information about the profession and important skills/functions. This information will be helpful to assist you in deciding on your career path. Successful completion of the Pharmacy Technology program qualifies one for registration with the National Healthcare Association (NHA). Graduates are also encouraged to complete the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam, the nationally recognized certification exam for pharmacy technicians.
OBJECTIVES:
Upon completing the Pharmacist Technology Program, students will be able to:
- Students apply mathematical calculations essential to the duties of pharmacy technicians in a variety of pharmacy settings.
- Students classify medications and their uses as relevant to the role of a pharmacy technician.
- Students compare and contrast the roles of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in ensuring pharmacy department compliance with professional standards and relevant legal, regulatory, formulary requirements, contractual, and safety requirements.
- Students prepare medications requiring compounding of sterile, non-sterile, and hazardous products.

PHAR. 101 INTRODUCTIONS TO PHARMACY TECHNOLOGY SYSTEM:
This introductory course is designed to provide the student with an overview of the pharmacy profession and the role of the pharmacist, pharmacy technician, and pharmacy clerk in all pharmacy settings. Students will be introduced to pharmacy law and will learn how to read and process prescriptions. This course familiarizes students with Pharmacy Technology terms and job opportunities in this field. The course is designed to show the students some history of Pharmacy Technology from the beginning and the Fundamentals of Administration, Licenses, Business, Definitions and Terms using in Pharmacy Technology industries.
PHAR 102 SKILLS LABS INTRODUCTION:
This course is designed to provide the student with hands-on experience working with a computerized Pharmacy Management System in the retail setting

PHAR 103 PHARMACY OPERATIONS I:
This course is designed for the student to develop the interpersonal communication skills needed to work in a pharmacy setting dealing with patients, pharmacists, and co-workers. Students will also develop a basic understanding of hospital distribution systems and medication order transcription.
PHAR 104: PHARMACY OPERATIONS II
This course is designed for the Pharmacy Technician major to develop proficiency in skills necessary to both hospital and community pharmacy settings. It will also introduce students to the many contemporary issues facing the pharmacy profession. Included will be use of forms, drug formularies, patient profiles, patient charts, processing of medication orders, drug manufacturing and packaging, and computers.
PHAR 105 MEDICATION CALCULATIONS:
This section focus on skills and concepts utilized to calculate drug dosage. Problem solving, application of basic algebraic concepts, formulas, proportional relationships, systems of measurement and measurement system conversions are included.
PHAR 106 PHARMACEUTICS:
This course stresses the designed to develop the practical application of fundamentals of measurements and mathematics utilized by the pharmacy technician.
PHAR 107 OVER THE COUNTER PRODUCTS:
Students are instructed in the evolution knowledge about Over the Counter (OTC) products in relation to their classification and general actions to help a person select a non-prescription drug safely and rationally.
PHAR 108 PHARMACY OPERATIONS III:
Students are taught the correct designed to develop proficiency in the preparation and storage of sterile products. Topics include infection control, aseptic technique, sterile product compatibility and the use of pharmacy equipment in medication preparation. United States Pharmacopeia guidelines and New Jersey Consumer Affairs regulations are emphasized.
PHAR 109 PHARMACY OPERATIONS IV:
This course provides training in the art, science, and technology of pharmaceutical compounding. It is designed for the Pharmacy Technician major to develop proficiency in the skills necessary for successful compounding technique and practice in both the hospital and community pharmacy settings. This course includes the history and theory of pharmaceutical compounding, non-sterile preparations, use of dosage forms, rationale for use of various drug formulations, patient-specific criteria indicating alternative dosage forms, herbal alternatives, and regulations governing the practice of compounding and packaging.
PHAR 110 PHARMACY TECHNICIAN PHARMACOLOGY I:
This course covers information on drugs affecting the gastrointestinal system, vitamin, nutrient, and mineral balance, infectious diseases, neoplastic disorders, immunological function, hormonal function, pharmacogenomics and nutrigenomics. Content includes how drugs exert their effects, adverse effects, and major indications for drug use. Emphasis will be placed on routes of administration and product types.
PHAR 111 PHARMACY TECHNICIAN PHARMACOLOGY II:
This section covers information on drugs affecting the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, and integumentary systems. Content includes major indications for drug use, how drugs exert their effects, adverse effects, and specific implications for consumer awareness. Drugs of abuse, at risk populations, and treatment regimens are emphasized. Students will learn routes of administration and product types
PHAR 112 CLINICAL EXPERIENCES I:
This course is designed to provide the student with practical experiences in selected community pharmacy settings working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.
HVAC 113 CLINICAL EXPERIENCES II:
This section is designed to provide the student with practical experiences in the classroom lab and in selected hospital pharmacy settings working with intravenous additives and sterile extemporaneous packaging areas.
PHAR 114 PHARMACENTICS:
This section is designed to develop the practical application of fundamentals of measurements and mathematics utilized by the pharmacy technician

This course is designed as a survey of human anatomy and physiology. It covers the basic principles of human anatomy and physiology including a survey of the tissues, organ systems, and principal anatomical features.
