Electrical Technician
Program Description:
The Electrical Technician (ET) program prepares students for entry level positions in the electrical field. The Electrical Technician program provides students with a basic understanding of the materials, tools and processes used by electrical professionals to complete residential and light-commercial electrical assignments. Students learn safe-work practices, hand and power tool identification and operation, as well as the common fixtures and components used to assemble electrical units systems. The program also provides instruction on the design and installation of standard electrical systems. At Com-Tec Institute, students will be able to study the National Electrical Code, apply Ohms law, read schematics and blueprints understand environmental factors, use of various measuring devices and develop skills to design and layout wiring circuits for residential and commercial projects. Mathematics studies are also important subjects in the curriculum. Hands-on practice is an important experience in Electricians Technician subjects’ student will receive.
Objectives:
The objectives of Electrical Technician program provides graduates with the technical background and the manual skills necessary for careers in the installation and maintenance of modern electrical systems, electrical equipment, and electrical controls. Graduates are critical thinkers and are able to troubleshoot problems in residential, commercial, or industrial electrical environments. This program is to develop well rounded electrical technicians as lifelong learners with the ability to adapt, grow, and succeed in a electromechanical engineering environment, or similar highly competitive workplace. The cooperative education experience prepares students to step into professional positions after graduation and be immediately productive in jobs that include minor mechatronics development, electromechanical system design and analysis, alternative energy, or system engineering.
Upon completing the Electrical Technician Program, students will be able to:
- 1Describe the basic materials and tools used for standard residential electrical projects and describe how they are applied as part of the construction and home-repair process.
- Outline the basic concepts and rules of electrical safety and list the types of personal protective equipment used by electrical technicians to stay safe on the job site.
- Perform the essential math, print-reading functions, and interpretation of plumbing codes required to execute standard electrical services.
- Describe the components and assembly techniques required for the installation systems.
- Describe the application and installation of standard electrical fixtures and appliances.
- Describe the career opportunities available in the electrical profession and identify the key work characteristics of successful electricians.
- Apply the technical and general education knowledge gained at Com-Tec Institute to become successful technicians or continuing students in the Electrical Engineering Technology field.
- Demonstrate solid technical communication and problem solving skills.

ELET 101 INTRODUCTIONS TO ELETRICAL CONCEPTS:
This course familiarizes students with terms and job opportunities in this field. The course is designed to show the students some history of electricity from the beginning and the Fundamentals of Administration, Licenses, Business, Definitions and Terms using in electrical technology, Communications and Accounting. Also, students learn to identify tools for use in electricity concepts and to follow proper shop procedures. Students receive an introduction to Green Technology and Energy Efficiency in the trades.
ELET 102: EQUIPMENT & SAFETY APPLICATIONS:
This section continue covers on the basic concepts of electricity, including tools of the trade, safety regulations, general rules and personal protection equipment, first aids, pipes, categories and uses and functions, common types of fittings, blueprints basics, reading sketches, types of drawings, dimensioning, views, symbols and abbreviations, drafting tools, trade math, systems of measurement, conversions, calculations areas and volumes. Students learn to take proper safety precautions in the field. Safe handling and operation of tools and equipment are continuously emphasized.
ELET103: D.C. ELECTRIC:
This course covers investigation of direct current and its behavior in series, parallel, and series/parallel circuits; measuring devices and components; and electromagnetism.
ELET104: A.C. ELECTRICITY:
This course covers investigation of alternating current and its behavior in resistive and reactive series, parallel, and series/parallel circuits; use of test instrumentation; electromagnetic induction; and resonation.
ELET 105: ELETNATIONAL ELETRICAL CODE 1:
This course covers the requirements of the National Electrical Code.
ELET 106: CONSTRUCTION SITE SAFETY:
Safety in the workplace is everyone's responsibility. This course covers basic employee safety training for hazards commonly encountered on a construction site or an industrial workplace. Employees can greatly reduce the chance of injury to themselves or co-workers by carefully following the safety rules and safe work practices.
ELET 107: ELETRICAL INSTALLATION FOUNDAMENTAL:
Construction is the systematic process of putting something together. Constructing electrical systems requires a variety of mechanical skills including, but not limited to, measuring, cutting, drilling, bending, fabricating, mounting, fastening, supporting, and terminating. These basic mechanical skills become the foundation for technical and specialized skills. As such, construction requires the efficient and safe use of numerous hand and power tools, as well as the techniques to use trade-specific tools. In addition, electrical work is a licensed and regulated occupation. Student will be aware of the laws and rules governing licensing and registration so as not to find themselves facing the consequences of working unlawfully.
ELET 108: BLUE PRINT READING FOR ELECTRICAL:
This course investigates blueprint reading for electricians. This course consist of basic sketching and drawing techniques, applications of plans, scales and scaling applications, symbology, and print reading.
ELET 109: ANALOGY & DIGITAL ELECTRONICS THORY:
This course covers the theory of semiconductors, power supplies, amplifiers, digital circuits, microprocessor applications, sensors, and signal coupling materials/devices. Prerequisites:
ELET 110: ANALOGY & DIGITAL ELECTRONICS LAB:
This course covers connecting, testing, and analyzing semiconductors, power supplies, amplifiers, digital circuits, microprocessor applications, sensors, and signal coupling materials/devices.
ELET 111: PLANNING, INSTALLATION & WIRING THORY:
This course covers material and design of residential wiring, wiring methods, selection of proper fastening devices, sizing of wire and boxes, branch circuit requirements, and use of blueprints.
ELET 112: BASIC CONSTRUCTION SKILL & WIRING:
This course covers lab experiences in material and design of residential wiring, wiring methods, selection of proper fastening devices, sizing of wire and boxes, branch circuit requirements, and use of blueprints.
ELET 113: ELECTRICAL APPARATUSE THORY:
This course will consist of technical instruction and assessment of knowledge related to the installation and operation of electrical apparatus. Students will receive instruction on basic and complex control circuits, single-phase and three-phase motors and transformers, across-the-line motor controllers, reduced voltage starters, variable frequency drives, and power distribution and transfer apparatus. In addition, students will study the National Electrical Code requirements governing the installation of electrical equipment and apparatus. The majority of the technical information will be used to support a parallel lab course.
ELET 114: ELECTRICAL APPARATUSE LAB:
This course will consist of clearly directed lab exercises with the expectation of exact results, performance evaluations and related assignments. Students will have an opportunity to connect, troubleshoot, and operate both basic and complex control circuits, connect and operate single-phase and three-phase motors, across-the-line motor controllers, reduced-voltage starters, and variable frequency drives. In addition, students will connect and operate single-phase and three-phase transformers, autotransformers, and other electrical equipment and apparatus. The supporting technical information will be provided through a parallel theory course.
ELET 115: PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLERS THEORY:
Course work includes the technical information supporting a parallel lab course. Students will learn Allen-Bradley RSLogix 500 and RSLogix 5000 programming software to write, edit, download, and operate control programs for Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1100, SLC-500, and CompactLogix PLC hardware. Students will learn Allen-Bradley Panelbulder32 programming software to create applications for the Panel view 300 and 600 operator interface terminals. In addition, will students study basic instrumentation and networking strategies associated with automation technologies.
ELET 116: PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLERS LAB:

This course covers the use of materials and design of industrial wiring, industrial tools and equipment, service equipment, and maintenance technology.
ELET 121: COMMERCIAL WIRING THEORY & LAB:
This course covers the use of materials and design of commercial wiring, commercial tools and equipment, service equipment, and maintenance technology. Prerequisites:
ELET 122: HEATING, VENTILATION & AIR CONDITIONING WIRING & LAB:
This course covers the use of materials and design of materials and equipment for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning residential, commercial and industrial buildings.
